This course features leading experts from across the spectrum of Earth observation and Earth science, led by a core group of senior presenters whose short profiles are provided below.

Presenters

Professor Konrad Steffen

Director, Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL)

Professor Konrad Steffen is one of the world's leading glaciologists and experts on climate change. He holds several senior positions in academia and on international advisory panels.

Dr Martin Schneebeli

Senior Scientist and Snow Physicist

Senior scientist and snow physicist at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) / Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF). Dr Schneebeli’s research focuses on how to measure snow properties quantitatively and at higher spatial resolution, from the field to the micro-scale.

Professor Andrew Shepherd

Professor of Earth Observation

Professor of Earth Observation at the University of Leeds. Andrew is also the Director of the NERC Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling and Principal Scientific Adviser to the European Space Agency’s CryoSat-2 satellite mission.

Dr Bianca Perren

Quaternary Paleoecologist

Quaternary paleoecologist specialising in Arctic/Antarctic environmental change at the Natural Environment Research Council, British Antarctic Survey (BAS). Dr Perren uses diatoms and other fossil remains in lake sediments to reconstruct changing environmental conditions.

Dr Kate Briggs

Research Fellow

Kate is a Research Fellow at the University of Leeds, Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM). Her research uses the techniques of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and altimetry to study ice sheet change. She is involved in the Ice Sheet Mass Balance Inter-comparison Exercise (IMBIE) project.

Dr Neige Calonne

Postdoctoral fellow at WSL / SLF

Neige is a Postdoctoral fellow at WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) Her research interests are Physics of the snow metamorphism: microstructural and fabric properties, physical processes, X-ray tomography, cold laboratory experiments.

Dr Nena Griessinger

Hydrologist

Nena is a Hydrologist at the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF). Her research interests are in mountain hydrology and mass movement snow hydrology.

Dr Anna Hogg

ESA Living Planet Fellow

Anna is a European Space Agency (ESA) Independent Research Fellow working in the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM) at the University of Leeds. Her primary field of expertise is Earth observation of the Polar regions.

Dr Lino Schmid

Researcher

Lino is a Researcher at WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF). His expertise is in avalanche formation and prevention.

Dr Rachel Tilling

Research Fellow

Rachel is a Research Fellow at the UK Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling, specialising in satellite observations of sea ice.

Dr Joshua Willis

Project Scientist - Jason-3

Josh Willis is an Oceanographer and Climate Scientist who studies sea-level rise and ocean warming. He is also a member of the science team for Jason 2, an ocean Earth-science mission. His area of expertise is current sea level rise, as well as measuring ocean temperatures.
